I was having a daily chat yesterday with my 15-year old son Kenneth. Usually our conversations are centered on his passions, namely Apple computers or digital photography and at times, sports. He loves tech talks. Since I’m not a tech person, I need to pay double close attention to follow what he says.
Yesterday was different. He was talking in plain English why he believed his photography skills improved significantly over the past month. If you’d like, you can visit flickr to see a collection of his work. I’m going to borrow the wisdom from this budding young photographer and hope that it will give you an aha moment about your career and your life.
Here’s what he said about taking the perfect shot:
“We don’t just keep shooting photos and hope that we can tweak one into a perfect shot; that rarely happens. Instead, we must first have a vision of the perfect shot and then create it.”
Is where you are right now in your career and your life a result of tweaking the chance events that came your way or is it a result of deliberately creating the opportunities so that you are on your way to living your life vision?
I observe from reading financial analysts forums that compensation package is among the most popular topics. I have come across a number of posts where the analysts made a decision between two dissimilar job offers based on the more attractive package. Now that would be like randomly pointing your camera at anything and hoping to capture the perfect shot.
There are good reasons why being an analyst can be a financially rewarding career. It takes diligence, persistence and commitment, especially so when the market is rough. Without a vision that is fuelled by your passion, you’ll either quit easily or feel unfulfilled.
What does the vision of your life look like?
