Every time when I was faced with a new experience, I used to ask:
“What if it doesn’t work out?”
Now, I’d say:
“I’m going to have fun and I’ll get the best out of it.”
I have learned to become much more adventurous after my multiple layoffs. I used to need the security of planning everything in advance before I’d take action. Apparently, life doesn’t work that way. Life kept throwing curve balls at me because it has more exciting plans than I could ever imagine.
Another important realization is that the path of life isn’t a straight line from “Here to Destination”. Sometimes, the path is straight so I can see clearly ahead. Other times, it bends sharply and I need to have faith that it will take me where I want to go. Now I know that it’s okay to for me to take a detour and savor the magnificent scenery.
Even if I take a wrong turn somewhere, I know that there are many paths that can take me towards my destination. Perhaps, I may even decide to make a course correction on the way.
If your career isn’t unveiling the way you had envisioned, it’s all right. You may feel distressed you can’t find a job where you are but if you venture out to a different city or a different country, you may end up finding a position that exceeds your expectations. You may reluctantly switch to another finance field but later discover that it is your passion.
Keep up your adventurous spirit. Embrace every moment that life sends you, whether or not it’s what you want. The fun is in the journey. It ends when you reach your destination. That’s when you’ll start planning your next adventure.
