When job openings were scarce during the 1997 financial crisis in Asia, I used to say:
“Life isn’t fair. I can’t find the work that I want.”
Looking back, I would say:
“Life isn’t fair. I have multiple opportunities when some of my friends don’t even have a single job offer.”
I was a little resentful and my ego a little dented when I moved from an international powerhouse to work with a regional brokerage. It was ranked among the top in Asia but the name wasn’t as prestigious. The team was smaller and the office wasn’t as glamorous.
As time went by, I began to see the beauty of a smaller work environment. The hours were more flexible, my co-workers more sincere and there were far fewer travels. When I have learned to appreciate what I have and stopped focusing on what I don’t, I was able to enjoy my work more than ever before. It was during this time of my career when I produced my best research.
If you are going through a particularly challenging time of your career, count your blessings. Keep an open mind so you can understand the lessons behind the experience. It could be your signal to reconnect with your family and friends or a call to further your professional skills.
If you are living life in the fast lane, slow down for a moment each day to appreciate what you have. Don’t take anything for granted. Be thankful you still have a job. Show your appreciation to your family, your friends and your self as well. Speaking from experience, the unexpected can happen anytime.
